On Wednesday, August 7, Houts addressed the clip, tweeting out an apology. The screenshot of a lengthy note read, “Anything I say isn’t going to make those believe I’m a bad person stop believing that, and I’m aware of this. I apologize to anyone who has been effected [sic] negatively by the footage.” She went on to say that things in her “outside life have been less than exceptional,” and she didn’t want to play “the victim card,” but she deemed her actions unusual for her character.

Houts went on to explain that it doesn’t “justify” her actions, and she denied spitting on the animal. She also said that she is not an animal abuser and that she felt it necessary to make a statement so as to explain her actions. Per Houts’ explanation, she had been attempting to calm the dog after it jumped onto her lap. However, she did point out that the way she handled it was incorrect.
