Let’s be honest, though: These before-and-after photos prove they’re all winners

Here at Allure, before-and-after photos typically involve a celebrity who’s just dyed her hair pink or a fresh injection of lip fillers. Today is a very special day. Today we get to talk about dog makeovers.

In honor of National Spoil  Dog Day, a fake holiday I can actually get behind even though I’m a cat person, lifestyle and pet brand Wahl partnered with GreaterGood.org to donate funds and grooming products to pet shelters in need. A clean, groomed dog is more likely to get adopted, so this initiative helps shelters increase their charges’ chances of finding a forever home with a bath and a haircut.

“Imagine going to a job interview, or on a first date covered in mud. Unfortunately, that’s the reality for millions of shelter dogs looking to make a good first impression,” Steven Yde, division vice president for Wahl, tells Allure. “Grooming not only impacts a dog’s appearance, it’s beneficial to the dog’s health and overall quality of life. And for a shelter dog, a good bath can mean the difference between sitting in the shelter and finding a forever home.”

To help get the word out, Wahl and GreaterGood.org launched Dirty Dogs, a contest in which owners and shelters sent in before and after photos of their pets. The photos have been narrowed down to 10 finalists, and  can officially go in and vote for  favorite dog makeover.

Each makeover is accompanied by its own little puppy tale. Here’s the story about Griffin, a dog who, as  see in the photos below, now wears a tie. “Griffin was in a kill shelter before being saved by the local Humane Society. He was in horrific shape as the severe matting was causing nerve damage in his back legs and irritating his sensitive eyes. Once groomed, he turned into a completely different little dog. Free from all that fur, Griffin was able to walk and play like a normal pooch.”  can see all the entrants and their accompanying stories on dirtydogsgallery.com.

And now, I’ll shut up and share the dog photos, courtesy of Wahl:
