Her modeling career is just one of the topics she covers in her upcoming book, A Woman Makes a Plan.
A few years ago, might have not known who Maye Musk is. Thanks to a 2017 CoverGirl commercial that’s still regularly running, however, her beautiful, now 71-year-old face has become a very familiar one — and so has her voice. “They say at a certain age, just stop caring,” she says in her charming South African accent. “I wonder what age that is.” And now, the model is using her voice in a different but just as influential way: in a new book that takes the glamorous and not-so-glamorous experiences of her life and turns them into practical advice for anyone looking to successfully navigate their own ups and downs.
In A Woman Makes a Plan:
Advice for a Lifetime of Adventure, Beauty, and Success, published by Viking/Penguin, Musk reflects on her memories and turns them into insights on everything from raising equally ambitious children as a single mother
The career challenges Musk has faced as a model have shifted over the years but are largely rooted in defying antiquated norms in the beauty and fashion industry. “Being the oldest CoverGirl was my biggest modeling achievement, and is appreciated by women of all ages,” she tells Allure. But that wasn’t her only groundbreaking modeling moment. In the 1980s, when body diversity was practically nonexistent in the business, Musk broke down barriers. After gained about 65 pounds, Musk was surprised to find that she was still booking modeling jobs. “Then a whole new plus-size fashion line was introduced, and I was their model. I was the first plus-size model in South Africa.”
Although Musk has worn both model and dietitian-nutritionist hats throughout her life, being a writer is a new pursuit — but it’s one she felt she couldn’t put off any longer. “During my many interviews and talks around the world, people would say I had ‘pearls of wisdom.’ That comes with age and experience,” Musk tells Allure. “Through comments from people at my talks, and from the many younger people who follow me on social media, I began to see how the things I have survived and struggled through over many decades might help someone who is going through something similar in their own lives.”
So instead of limiting unintentional advice to just interviews and Instagram, Musk decided to focus on a way to give a broader audience an inspirational catalyst, in the form of a book.
“While there are many bad situations may run into, and life might not be working out the way want it to, can make a change — even if it’s scary. There is no need to accept an unhappy personal or business life. I did, too often and for too long, until I planned to make a change,” Musk tells Allure. “So, I wanted to share my advice in a book in hopes to inspire others to make a plan and live a happier life. I cannot wait for everyone to read the book.”
A Woman Makes a Plan will be released on December 31, and it’s available for preorder at mayemusk.com.
