It’s rare to see the Duchess wearing such casual attire, and we’re here for it.
Kate Middleton and Prince William, fresh off a reported family vacation in Mustique, got back to royal duties on Thursday, August 8, by competing in a sailing race to benefit some of their favorite charities.
WhilePrince George and Princess Charlotte made headlines for being ridiculously adorable, it was Middleton’s latest outfit choice that had folks on social media abuzz see, the Duchess of Cambridge wore — gasp! — shorts.
We’re all so used to seeing her in Alexander McQueen coatdresses and perfectly pinned fascinators that it was almost a shock to see Middleton’s legs out and about in public. But of course, her outfit made perfect sense for the activity she was about to participate in. Who would want to captain a sailboat in pumps and a dress?
The Duchess paired her sporty shorts with sneakers, a polo shirt, and a zip-up jacket. And frankly, she’s never looked more relatable. (Well, except for that perfect ponytail that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to achieve.)
Middleton is famously known to be very athletic, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that she seems perfectly at ease in this look, though it’s definitely a change of pace from her usual public attire. But when think about it, most of us can’t wear shorts to work either. She almost certainly wears them in her private life, running around the garden at Anmer Hall with the kids. While our jobs may be a little different than the future queen consort’s, we’ve all got dress codes to abide by.
It’s really great to see the royals getting casual, though. (William wore shorts as well.) And social media reactions were very emphatic and positive, which was wonderful, given how divisive royals commentary can sometimes get. “All I’m going to say is.. Kate needs to wear shorts more often! She is rocking them!” one Twitter user wrote. “No one freak out, but Kate Middleton wore shorts??? Yassss queeeeeennnnnn,” another commented.
